The Scriptures – The Importance of the word of God

Jesus Christ understanding of the old Testament Scripture’s was very much evident in his life and when he was dealing with people from all walks of life, He reminded the disciples, Pharisees, and individuals of What God had to say from His word. This also included the devil when Jesus resisted him when he was being tempted in the Wilderness with It is written.

Matthew 4: 3-4  And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Much of what Jesus Christ said directs the hearer and reader back to the scriptures.

Jesus Christ also referred people to specific old Testament scriptures.

For example when he walked with the two men on the road to Emmaus

Read Luke 13- 27 to understand the record but we will look at verse 27

Luke 24:27

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Let’s look at some other records where Jesus referred back the word of God

Matthew 12:1-8 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.

But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

From this record we see in verse 3 he says Have ye not read what David did? Verse 5 Have ye not read.

You can read these other scriptures where Jesus Christ quote the word of God. I will give you some records here for you to check yourself.

Matthew 19:4, Matthew 21:16, Matthew 22:31, Mark 2:25, Mark 12:10,26

He brought people back to the word of God.

Luke 4:17-18And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

The place that Jesus Found was Isaiah 61:1-2

Isaiah 61:1-2The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lordhath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Jesus Christ found the place where it was written, He also knew where to stop reading, Jesus not only read the scriptures and referred to the scriptures he fulfilled the scriptures which prophesied of Him.

Jesus knew the scriptures even at the age of 12 he sat in the temple and blew away the minds of those that heard him to speak let us have a look in Luke 2.

Luke 2:46-47  And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

Jesus knowledge of the scriptures and understanding and application was powerfully in his life and ministry.

We will finish off this article by looking at some other scriptures to show the importance of God’s word (The Scriptures) in the life of Jesus Christ and how very important it is for us to have a solid foundation and understanding of what God has to say to us today through His wonderful word today.

Matthew 22:29  Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

Matthew 26:53-56  Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

54 But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

Mark 14:49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

Luke 24:32

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Luke 24:45

45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

John 5:39

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Now lets us quickly read some records from the book of Acts and the church Epistles.

Acts 17:2  And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

Acts 17:11  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Acts 18:24  And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

Act 18:28  For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

Romans 1:2  (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)

Romans_15:4  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Romans 16:26  But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

1Corinthians 15:3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1Corinthians 15:4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

2Timothy 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2Peter 3:16  As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

God wants us to know what He says in Word, We are to studying to show ourselves approved unto God 11 Timothy 2:15 God has put great emphasis on His Word Psalms 138:1                   Jesus Christ knew what God’s word had to say so did the Apostle Paul and the other Apostles And if we really want to live unto God as well as walk by the spirit of God so must we have firm foundation of the scriptures and apply it in our lives. Like Our Lord and Saviour we too can say IT IS WRITTEN.

There are Many wonderful Bible classes you can take if your knowledge of the scriptures is limited. You can learn and understand

what God has to say to you today. God has given you His spirit which can help you understand as well. When you sit down to read

Gods word, ask God to open His word to you and your understanding like Jesus Christ opened the Minds of the two wonderful followers on the to road

Emmaus.  Jesus Said those’s that hunger after righteousness shall be filled.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
