Righteousness is a gift by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ and what he done on the cross, this is what produces a change within a man heart. Our actions cannot change our hearts, If we think that doing right makes you right before God then we make the same error that Pharisee made. Just because we may of cleaned up our act does not mean that we cleaned up our hearts. When we begin to understand our Righteousness in Christ, then we will begin to see great fruit produce. (Keep it simple)
